- Abstract
Metaphors, which can be defined as understanding by explaining a concept with another concept, are important tools used to comprehend and define abstract concepts, emotions, experiences and things that are difficult to understand. This study was carried out to reveal the perception of the prospective teachers, who continue their education to become art educators, about the concept of aesthetics, which is abstract, deep and difficult to express, through metaphors. A total of 103 prospective teachers, who continue their education in the 2021-2022 academic year and 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades of Dokuz Eylul University Buca Faculty of Education, Department of Fine Arts Education, participated in the research. Prospective teachers were asked to complete the following sentence: "Aesthetics is like ..., because ...". The content analysis was applied to 83 metaphors that were admitted and it was found that a total of 52 different metaphors were used and these metaphors were collected in 6 categories, namely "aesthetics as order, harmony, balance and integrity", "aesthetics as pleasure-giving and satisfactory", "aesthetics as being relative and reflective", "aesthetics as representing the beautiful and natural," aesthetics as being indispensable and needed", and "aesthetics as being a changing and developing perspective". It was found that the category of "aesthetics as being relative and reflective" is the most frequent one among the 6 categories.
