- Abstract
The autumn conference of the Department of Early Modern History and Rhineland Regional History at the University of Bonn took place in September 2022 in person again. The conference focused on the potential of regional and local history for historical education in teaching and instruction. Various approaches to regional history education were discussed, including the use of archaeological sources in teaching, the typology of regional history education in textbooks, and the use of medieval documents. In addition, museums and collections were considered as forums and resources for regional history learning. The Bonn collections offer various opportunities for science communication, research, teaching, and educational projects. During the COVID-19 pandemic, some university collections and museums also developed digital formats targeting students. The collections and museums can also address current debates and research, such as provenance research, the role of the University of Bonn in National Socialism and colonialism. It is emphasized that increased collaboration between university collections and museums, as well as the academic disciplines and history didactics, is necessary to develop new didactic offerings. The conference dealt with various aspects of history education and historical memory at the regional level. Possibilities were discussed to use the archive and the sources themselves as places of memory for the history of the city of Cologne. In addition, the tasks and possibilities of digitization projects for research and teaching were presented, especially in the field of newspaper archives. Libraries were also presented as extracurricular learning spaces that provide digital learning opportunities and research tools. Finally, two online portals for local and regional history were presented, which are intended to facilitate access to historical information. In the concluding panel discussion, the challenges of history education in the 21st century were discussed, including new processes of isolation and global interdependence effects. It was emphasized that history didactics could benefit from the interdependencies between global and regional spheres.
