- Abstract
The article discusses the two instances of anti-Armenian violence in Istanbul, Turkey, at the end of the 19th century, a suppression of protests and a massacre. The author characterizes both in terms of labor disputes in the capital but with social implications related to the provinces. The author identifies 3 major groups as involved: Armenian workers, Muslim workers in the city, especially Kurds, and the government of Ottoman sultan Abdul Hamid II.
