- Abstract
Brief Background The Probiotics are live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit to the host. The probiotics has recently been introduced to reduce the incidence of dental caries. Aims and Objectives To evaluate the effect of consumption of probiotic oral suspension and to quantify the gender difference of reducing children's salivary cariogenic microflora. Materials and Methods Twenty children, who were caries active in the age group of 3-6 years, were selected and divided equally into group I (male) and II (female) which were given 5 ml probiotic oral suspension. Saliva samples were collected before and after the consumption of oral suspension of probiotics. Assessment of salivary samples for the Salivary mutans streptococci count was done in both the groups. Results The study revealed a statistically significant (P < 0.001) reduction in salivary mutans streptococci (MS) counts after 1 hour in both the groups. The study revealed a significant reduction in salivary MS counts which was more in males as compared to the females. Summary and Conclusions The probiotic products could be used for displacing pathogenic microorganisms by probiotic bacteria and can thus be exploited for the prevention of enamel demineralization. Efforts are required to increase the awareness among chemists about the probiotic products.
