- Title
Acetyl-L-Carnitine Monograph.
- Abstract
The article offers information on acetyl-L-carnetine (ALC) that has a similar structure to acetylcholine and can exert cholinomimetic effects. ALC studies showed its beneficial effects in the treatment of Alzheimer's dementia, peripheral neuropathies and ischemia. Research studies indicated that ALC mechanisms of action could be related to its cholinergic neural transmission activity that enables it to enhance neuronal metabolism in the mitochondria while other studies suggest that ALC action consist of directly stimulating the synapses.
