- Abstract
This article discusses Mormon religion founder Joseph Smith's creative interpretations of the Bible. The author cites a paper written by Krister Stendahl, a New Testament scholar, that compares the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew in the King James Version of the Bible with 3 Nephi in the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon is a translation of a book that was claimed by Joseph Smith to have been given to him by an angel. Stendahl notes that Smith has added extra beatitudes to those of Jesus's sermon. Smith's additions expand the Bible to include versions that applied to the needs of his religious community.
