- Abstract
Although it is commonly believed that British-Asian girls and women are passive victims of both their own cultures and wider social structures of inequality and constraint, I argue that in the context of women's football in England, they are actually active agents in the making and shaping of their own careers. I particularly focus on the praxis of these females in order to explore how they have accommodated, negotiated and challenged various forms of inequality and discrimination in their leisure lives. Utilizing a cultural studies framework, I analyze the various forms of capital that these players adopt in order to improvise and perform identities that help them to carve out spaces of belonging in an otherwise alien environment. However, as it becomes apparent in the oral testimonies of the players included in this article, this does not necessarily guarantee acceptance and/or inclusion.
