- Abstract
"The Sound of Salvation: Voice, Gender, and the Sufi Mediascape in China" by Guangtian Ha is an ethnography that explores the sacred soundscape of the Jahriyya, a Chinese Sufi order known for their practice of "loud" zikr group chanting. The author, a Chinese Muslim himself, conducted fieldwork in the northwestern Chinese province of Ningxia to understand the use of the human voice in the cultivation of mystical truth within the Jahriyya tradition. The book examines the historical trajectories, social logics, and gender dynamics of the Jahriyya practices, highlighting their unique approach to ritual and their resistance to homogeneity. This ethnography provides valuable insights into the intersection of religion, sound, and gender in China's Sufi Muslim community.
