- Abstract
A double-balanced mixer (DBM) has some advantages over other types of mixers. Ring and star configurations are available for the construction of a DBM. Between the two, the star configuration is preferred for high frequency operation. The star configuration DBM consists of two dual baluns and a star diode quad. In this article, a novel planar dual balun, rising coupled microstrips is suggested and designed. The balun is adequate for mounting a star diode package and is successfully employed to realize a star configuration DBM. The performance of the DBM is not only comparable to that of a transformer DBM, but is also applicable for higher frequency operation.
