- Abstract
The article looks at the portrayal of the human body in mass media, focusing on how it has affected the body image of many women in a global context. Topics discussed include Fijian teenage girls who became bulimic after watching U.S. television programs, South Korean girls who have cosmetic surgery to Westernize the appearance of their eyelids, and the similarity between body shape in models. Concepts of femininity in mass media are reviewed. The author considers how mothers and pregnant women are influenced by cultural representations of the female body.
