- Abstract
The author reflects on how representatives in Congress are judged by their responses to the polarized environment in Washington where party is pitted against party. Topics discussed include the creation of a permanent class of elected officials whose sole profession is politics and for whom electoral survival by credit claiming and other defense mechanisms are crucial and the growing anger that comes from the inability of those elected to show the conscience required to do the public good.
