- Abstract
The article explores the concept of Southern Gothic, which is a catchall term for the peculiarities of the South and how it is understood. While the Southern Gothic has traditionally focused on white experiences, there is also a Black Southern Gothic that challenges stereotypes and explores the experiences of Black people in the South. The Black Southern Gothic draws on the region's history of racial violence and oppression, offering a different perspective on the South's dark realities. The article highlights various examples of the Black Southern Gothic in literature, music, and other forms of art. The Southern Gothic, both white and Black, serves as a way to understand and discuss uncomfortable truths about the South.
