- Abstract
In recent years, both in Bulgaria and in a number of European countries there is a clear trend for multiplication and diversification of festivals. This phenomenon is assessed as positive, as these events play a significant role in the preservation and activation of local communities, especially in times of crisis of various kinds. Numerous studies are available in the literature, focusing on the impact of local festivals and the various effects they produce on the cultural, social and economic life of local communities. The article problematizes the specifics of local festivals in Bulgaria and their role in preserving and activating local communities, especially in times of crisis of different nature. Based on the results of research on the topic, an attempt will be made to derive the "internal" resource that festivals have to influence local communities. This report presents some theoretical developments on the impact of festivals on local communities. By "local" communities we mean that form of coexistence of a set of individuals, located in a network of social relations, as its members carry out socially significant activities within a certain, clearly defined territory. (Kelian, 2010). The socially significant feature that is structurally defining in relation to the local community is the common territory for its members, as it is important not so much its physical and geographical characteristics, but the nature and quality of social relations that characterize it (Kelian, 2010: 42- 43). According to Jean-Jacques Rousseau, festivals have a significant impact on the local community as they help to strengthen equality and solidarity between its members. Based on the presented theoretical statements, the report argues that festivals in Bulgaria, especially in the modern global world, in order to be popular and attract more audiences should combine both tradition and innovation. Festivals in the Bulgarian context, regardless of their thematic focus, in most cases combine the festivity of traditional society, combined with various forms of national celebrations, inherited from communism, but also new forms of collective gatherings. In most cases, local festivals can also be seen as part of the process of building local identities, which draw their resources from what is seen, reconstructed and argued as a local heritage. Based on the theoretical review of the literature on the problem within the project "Local Festivals: a resource for local communities to deal with crises", funded by the Research Fund of the Ministry of Education and Science will allow to outline some essential characteristics of local festivals. preservation and development of local communities.
