- Abstract
Brucellosis is a zoonosis causing a disease in humans, domestic and wild animals. Worldwide, brucellosis is considered one of the biggest public health issues. Brucellosis in pigs is characterized with infertility, abortions, stillbirth or non-vital offspring, and orchitis and infection of secondary sex organs of males. In both sexes, lameness and paralysis occur. Disease is generally transmitted during copulation, partus and/or abortion via uterine discharge. In humans, infection is usually limited to persons with occupational hazards including laboratory staff. Ability of B. suis to colonize bovine udder with subsequent excretion in milk potentially poses a serious health risk for humans.
