- Abstract
Kemālpāşāzāde Aḥmed Efendī (d. 940/1534) who is one of the most distinguished and prolific scholars and philosophers of the Ottoman era presented systematic criticisms towards some earlier foundational texts under the titles of "Tağyīr (Redesign)", "Islāh (Correction)", and "Tajwīd (Refine)". His critical project incorporated a solid criticism of some seminal and influential works in linguistic, rational, and traditional sciences, both in form and content. Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī's (d. 672/1274) Tajrīd al-I'tiqād was also part of this project. In his work entitled Tajwīd, Kemālpāşāzāde re-wrote Tajrīd, and his Sharḥ Tajwīd al-Tajrīd presents a commentary on it. Kemālpāşāzāde's interest in Tajrīd was, in fact, not limited to these two. In addition to a separate commentary (Sharḥ al-Tajrīd), he wrote also superglosses on some glosses on Tajrīd, such as Ḥāshiya li-Ḥāshiyat al-Jalāl. So far, neither his general critical project nor these two works on Tajrīd have been subject to due scholarly interest. In this article, we focus on Kemālpāşāzāde's studies on Tajrīd and present a detailed study of Tajwīd, as well as its critical edition for the first time based on extant manuscript copies. Thus, the article is divided into four parts: "The Ottoman Tajrīd Tradition-From Tajrīd to Tajwīd", "Kemālpāşāzāde's works on Tajrīd", "Kemālpāşāzāde's Critique of Tajrīd: Tajwīd al-Tajrīd", and the critical edition of Tajwīd al-Tajrīd.
