- Abstract
The process of symmetry variation in the helical vortices formed in a flow induced by rotating lids of a cylindrical cavity was studied. The phenomenon of alternation of the right- and left-handed vortices caused by increased flow swirling was observed for the first time and a relationship was established between the formation of a recirculation zone and the appearance of a left-handed vortex structure in the flow. The results are important both for the explanation of the vortex breakdown phenomenon and for the further development of the vortex concept in the theory of turbulence and of the mechanical analogies used for the description of physical fields and particles.
