- Abstract
The article discusses the role of enamel pearls in localized severe periodontitis. As stated, several researches have revealed that bacterial dental plaque is the main etiologic factor in gingivitis and periodontitis.Variations in tooth morphology and local anatomy are said to influence an isolated area to inflammation by providing a corner for periodontopathic bacteria. A case of a 53 year old African-American woman is discussed. This woman was complaining of sensitivity in the maxillary right posterior region. Periodontal examination revealed chronic localized moderate periodontitis of the interproximal surfaces. The enamel pearls in this case were separated from the coronal enamel. Later the pearls became cause of plaque and calculus leading to severe isolated destruction.
