- Abstract
The article explores the move by John Day, first Liberia missionary of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), to shift his allegiance from Triennial Convention to serve SBC which is known for its support of slavery. It discusses the historical background of the ideologies confronted by Day and Southern Baptists such as colonization, pro-slavery Christianity and Africa missions. It cites the resignation of Day from the Triennial Convention due to disputes in pay. Day emphasized the role played by Southern Baptists in the redemption of Africa.
