- Title
A League Too Far: Philip Sidney and The Holy Roman Empire II.
- Authors
KUIN, ROGER
- Abstract
Philip Sidney's third visit to the Continent was prompted by a new geopolitical situation: renewed revolt in the Netherlands against Spain, and constant religious civil wars in France, where in 1576 the Guise clan organised a national Catholic League which attempted to recruit also the governments of neighboring nations. This led Queen Elizabeth and her advisers to resurrect an old plan for a countervailing Protestant League; and it was to sound out princes of the Empire about this that Philip, son of a Vice-Roy and thus officially a prince, was sent over, ostensibly to congratulate the new Emperor Rudolf II. The plan fell foul of the increasing hostility between Lutheran and Reformed churches and princes, mostly concerning the doctrine of the Eucharist; and Sidney returned empty-handed though much-praised for his diplomatic handling of a difficult assignment.
