- Abstract
This article examines the aphid-transmitted yellowing virus disease of sunflower. This experiment shows that the chlorotic symptoms on sunflower at the Plant Breeding Institute, Cambridge were caused by infection with a persistent aphid-transmitted virus of the beet western yellow virus (BWYV) group. These viruses have a very wide host range, including many common weeds, and are prevalent in eastern England. Virus-induced yellowing might therefore become common on sunflower should the crop become widely grown in areas where Myzus persicae and sources of BWYV are abundant.
