- Authors
Kleber, Herbert D.
- Abstract
The article looks at methadone maintenance since the 1965 publication of a clinical trial on methodone treatment for heroin addiction by Dole and Nyswander. A summary of the original article is included. The history of the expansion of methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) programs in the U.S. is presented. Studies which show the positive effects of MMT are discussed. In particular MMT was effective in reducing crime, mortality, and risk of human immunodeficiency virus infection. Safety and U.S. federal regulation of methadone are addressed. The stigma associated with methadone in the 1980's is also discussed.
