- Abstract
The article discusses research comparing the medical outcomes of Medicare beneficiaries who underwent coronary stenting before and after the availability of drug-eluting stents and the rate of stent thrombosis. The design and setting of the observational study involving a comparison of Medicare patients who received coronary bare-metal stents and those who received drug-eluting stents are detailed. The outcomes measured include coronary revascularization surgery, ST-elevation myocardial infarction, and survival through 2 years following the procedure. Research results suggest that drug-eluting sents are linked to a decline in the need for repeat revascularization procedures with a similar ST-elevation myocardial infarction risk for bare-metal stents.
