- Abstract
The article discusses cultural differences related to clothing and identity in Africa and France and the development of a fashion industry in post-colonial African societies. The strategies used by French textile and fashion designers to adapt to the expectations of a traditional or non-European market, the African influence on Western fashion design in terms of categorization of clothing as a commodity, the association of clothing with identity, and the effect of French colonial rule on clothing style in the early 20th century.
