- Abstract
Traveling is an important leisure activity in urban family life. With the improvement of women’s social status and economic power, women’s discourse power in family traveling is becoming increasingly prominent. However, the existing domestic research on family tourism focuses on women’s consumption and decision, ignoring their traveling experience. This study aims to explore Chinese women’s cognition and experience of family traveling from a female perspective, explaining the phenomenon and reasons for women’s feeling of“tired but happy”and revealing the leisure dilemma faced by women. This study takes urban women who have been on family traveling with their children aged 12 and below as the research object. Semi-structured interviews and grounded theory were used to record and analyze women’s thoughts and words. The questioning method and sequence were handled flexibly according to the response of the respondents. With the consent of the respondents, the interview contents were recorded by means of recording and writing. Following the saturation principle of grounded theory, this study adopted theoretical sampling to analyze the data right after the interview. In the process, data analysis and sample selection were carried out alternately, and the sample selection was adjusted at any time according to the continuous comparison of coding conditions. Finally, the family bonding model in family traveling and the model of women’s perception of family traveling experience were produced to explain Chinese urban women’s cognition and feelings on family traveling. The results display that: 1) Travelling provides higher quality space-time conditions for improving the stability and harmony of a family. It is a symbol of family happiness, which reflects multiple symbolic meanings of happy education, self- expression, role confirmation, pursuit of happiness, etc., making it a new scenario of family bonding. 2) The motivation and significance of women’s participation in parent-child family traveling lie in family bonding, which means improving the relationships among self, family, society and nature. The four dimensions are an organic unity. The ultimate pursuit is the harmony and unity of individual development and family development as a whole. 3) Family traveling is not a pure leisure activity, in which women’s experience is constrained by family relationships, traditional ethics and the lack of social care service. It is difficult for women to enjoy the happiness brought by family traveling. Tiredness and happiness have become the major elements in women’s experience of family traveling. 4) Besides family bonding, women tend to pursue self-satisfaction and self-development. However, this pursuit is still constrained by time, money, interpersonal relationships. Inadequate bonding between ego and self. They expect to achieve a balance between family and individual, family and self, and find a balance between belonging and individualization. This provides a female perspective for the study of family traveling experience in China and offers some enlightenment for the improvement of family tourism services. Meanwhile, this study reveals that childcare service is needed in family traveling to some degree.
