- Abstract
Animal colouration techniques have long piqued the interest of naturalists and philosophers, and Aristotle extensively highlighted them in his more than 2000-year-old work, Historian Animalia. In nature, butterflies have several stunningly colored wings. How these colors are produced continues to baffle scientists. The presence of a butterfly in an ecosystem is an excellent environmental indicator, because pollination of flowering plants is essential for floral diversity conservation. The survey was conducted to prepare a checklist of butterflies and to know the butterfly species' status at the Bajaj College of Science, Wardha, Central India, from December 2018 to March 2019. The area of the investigated region is about 37 acres with all-over greeneries. A total of 24 butterflies were investigated, belonging to three families, namely, Nymphalidae, Pieridae, and Papilionidae. Of these 24 studied species, 11 species (15.66%) belonged to family Nymphalidae, Pieridae included ten species (10.90 %), and Papilionidae consisted of three species (3.90%). When we see species richness, the highest number of species belonged to the family Nymphalidae. This study provides the baseline data to understand the diversity and environmental condition of the campus area and nearby regions and is also helpful for other conservation strategies.
