- Title
Can a "Last Comic Standing" Finally Rescue Little Black Sambo from the Jungle?
- Authors
Lester, Neal A.
- Abstract
An essay on the main character of Helen Bannerman's "The Story of Little Black Sambo" and its revision by Last Comic Standing finalist contestant Lavell Crawford is presented. It offers an account of reviews and criticisms of the work since its publication in 1899 and discusses its racial and violent overtones concerning black children. The author argues that the monologue by Crawford is a narrative that gives the said character with the voice he needs to orchestrate his physical survival.
