- Title
Asymmetry and Self-Love: The Challenge to Reciprocity and Equality.
- Authors
JAMIE FERREIRA, M.
- Abstract
In their normative accounts of relationship, both Kierkegaard and Emmanuel Levinas attack the subtle ways in which we disguise self-love and attempt to reduce the Other to the Same. This essay begins by exploring the grounds of their common rejection of the dimension of "reciprocity" (particularly in the notion of "infinite debt"). It then examines their positions on the relevance of "symmetry" in relation, and assesses the implications of their contrasting stands on "equality" and "love of self," suggesting distinctions between terminological and substantive disagreements.
