The article discusses the stand of four states of Micronesia (FSM) on modernity. It points to the islands' subsistence culture, where fishing and gathering coconuts in a harsh environment eventually gave rise to values of egalitarianism, respect for status, strong family ties and a concept of shared community. It observes that semi-modernization has influenced lifestyles. Also discussed is political governance.
