- Abstract
The training of middle-distance runners changes dramatically during pre-competitive period. The large-volume and relatively low-intensity training changes towards the end of pre-competitive period (somewhere of 3-6 weeks), to small-volume and highintensity training. Such training rearangement is named »tapering«. The hypothetically backgroung of the »tapering« consisted of assumption that such training changes resulted also in changes of the realtionship between adaptation (Pt) and fatigue (Ut), which occures during training periods. The reduction of predominantly fatigue results in enhancement of pertformance (Zt). We have tested this hypothesis by the calculation of Zt as difference: Pt - Ut. We have shown that succesfull and quick dissapearance of fatigue during »tapering« influenced faster increase of Zt which can be reached earlier and could be prolonged for a certain period of time. Sports praxis knows »tapering« during pre-competitive period where training rearangements lasting for about 3-6 weeks. The second period, where »tapering« is used sucessfully is a microcycle during competition season. This is a week time interval, which frequently influences also peak performance of the runner.
