- Title
A Menippean Defense of Spain's American Conquest: Linguistic Imperialism in Juan Pablo Forner's Exequias de la lengua castellana.
- Authors
O'HAGAN, CIARA
- Abstract
The article highlights the works of author Juan Pablo Forner in reform of Spanish language and linguistic Imperialism in his book "Exequias de la lengua castellana". It mentions that French author Guillaume Thomas François Raynal disparages the alleged heroism of the conquests of Mexico and Peru, denouncing instead the brutal exploitation and ruin of Mexican and Incan civilizations by conquistadors Hernán Cortés and Francisco Pizarro. It also mentions that mounting indignation among Spanish intellectuals in the eighteenth century led to the resurgence of the apologia tradition.
