- Abstract
The article discusses the Tolpuddle Martyrs, a group of early 19th-century English agricultural laborers, led by George Loveless, who were arrested, found guilty of swearing an unlawful oath, and transported to Australia. Their group, the Friendly Society of Agricultural Labourers, is discussed, as is the significance of secret oaths and other rites and ceremonies in the history of English trade unionism. Examples from labor groups like the Consolidated Union are discussed, as is the influence of socialism.
