The article examines the role of gender in early modern vernacular French letter books. According to the author, these compilations illustrated cultural debates surrounding learning, patriarchal authority, domestic morality, and marriage. Details on female letter writers such as Hélisenne de Crenne are presented. Other topics include letters between husbands and wives and letter writing manuals.
