- Authors
Gossard, Julia M.
- Abstract
The article discuses the relationship between French Catholic écoles de charité, or charity schools, and the French state during the late 17th century. Particular focus is given to the involvement of the church, the state, and the local elite in the operation of charity schools in Lyon, France. According to the author, the schools were intended as sites of social reproduction where elite ideals of morality, productivity, and efficiency could be taught to lower-class children.
