- Authors
Laurs, Brendan M.; Pardieu, Vincent
- Abstract
The article reports on mining for ruby and sapphires at the village of Winza in Tanzania. Permission from the government is needed for foreigners to be able to visit the new deposit. At least 5,000 miners are working on the mining site, using only handtools. Gemologist Karen M. Chadwick subjected a piece of a corundum-bearing host rock to Raman analysis and found that it is made up oh amphibole. It is noted that informal mining at the site prevents the calculation of how much corundum was being produced.
