The article presents the testing results of a gold coated onyx by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) laboratory in Carlsbad, California in 2007. The polished flat on the surface of the bead had refractive index (RI) values of 1.540-1.547. It also found a granular structure and a Fourier-transform infrared signal that is similar to chalcedony. Qualitative chemical analysis revealed that the coating is mostly made of gold with presence of other elements.
