- Title
Andrew Franta, Systems Failure: The Uses of Disorder in English Literature.
- Authors
Douglas, Aileen
- Abstract
They each, however, occupy a slightly off-center place in general accounts of the eighteenth-century novel, and so the prominence they are accorded here represents a refreshing swerve on Franta's part. These, however, are set against a curiously flat representation of the novel's history in ways that do not invalidate Franta's arguments, but do prompt reflection on constructions of literary history. Precisely such situations are also to the fore in Smollett's I Humphry Clinker i , and Franta attacks them with relish.
