- Abstract
Segmental limb blood pressures determined by a photoelectric technique and arteriographic and clinical findings were compared in 38 legs in which the peroneal artery was the only radiographically patent vessel below the knee, and in 78 legs in which all three leg arteries were occluded at the midcalf. Then, on the basis of that comparison, an analysis was made of the effectiveness of the peroneal artery in supplying blood to the foot and toes. In the former group, a lesser reduction in blood pressure at the foot and a lower incidence of gangrene of the toes were observed. These results suggest that the peroneal artery functions effectively in supplying blood to the foot and toes, even though it is not capable of fully maintaining the normal flow of blood there. Based on these findings, the effectiveness of revascularization to the peroneal artery to improve foot and digital circulation is discussed.
