- Abstract
This lecture provides a concise account of my personal insights into the artistic development, musical thought, personality, and philosophical outlook of George Perle as composer, theorist, and human being. My personal association with Perle, as mentor, colleague, and friend, dates officially from 1971, when I began my dissertation research with him at the City University of New York (CUNY). My very first encounter with him, however, actually dates back to the time I was his student at the Juilliard School of Music as early as 1962. My long personal association with Perle has provided me with a unique glimpse into the man as well as the composer. His insightful, often amusing anecdotal accounts, as well as his intensive musical discussions with me, which have always served as inspiration for my own creative thinking, seem to have become an inextricable part of his biographical portrait. The intention in this lecture is to reveal certain varied facets of the man and the musician as they inform both the objective and anecdotal data of his biography.
