- Title
The treatment of metal waste by melting.
- Authors
Lampard, John; Hillis, Kathy
- Abstract
The article focuses on the results of a literature review related to contaminated metal wastes management, which was undertaken by NNC Ltd. A workshop on the topic was also conducted. The aim behind the workshop was to consider the potential merits and obstacles in implementing melting as a treatment process for metal waste. Melting can be helpful in the release of radioactive waste outside the nuclear sector, reuse within the sector and disposal with reduced volume and activity. However, the acceptability of the process as a complementary strategy to disposal will depend on economic and strategic factors.
