- Title
Movement and Sound: The Musical Language of Body Rhythms in Interaction.
- Authors
Chapple, Eliot D.
- Abstract
The article presents a discussion related to the musical language of body rhythms in interaction. The term communication is not merely a word, but its primary denotation inevitably reminds of that mandatory merchandising process by which every aspiring manager or public persuader is supposed to acquire the techniques of symbolic manipulation and body movements for a price. As is well known, there are hordes of experts anxious to sell their wares. Many years ago, when the sanctity of communication was first becoming fashionable, the author wrote a short piece, "Understanding Is Not Enough," nor is it, in therapy, in industrial relations, in managerial effectiveness or in national or international affairs. To understand in no sense guarantees that one has or one will change how one acts. It merely provides great opportunity for self-justification. There are other usages and meanings, however worthy and interesting to pursue, that distract the attention from the investigation of the interaction rhythms themselves.
