Authors

Abstract

When applying classical acupuncture to treat pharyngitis, it is generally acceptable to select acupoints (acupuncture points) along the meridians, in contrast, modern acupuncture differs in that it typically selects the acupoints based on innervation of the pharyngeal area. On the basis of reviewing of these two different point-selection ideologies, the authors analyzed the relative specificity of acupoints in the treatment of pharyngolaryngeal diseases in terms of analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, as well as the impact of stimulation parameters on the overall efficacy (such as the amount of blood let out from the acupoints, the frequency and intensity of electrical stimulation, etc). Finally, the authors reveal their favorite acupoints, optimal selection methods and stimulation parameters for the treatment of pharyngitis due to various causes, including the novel coronavirus infection.
