- Abstract
The article discusses the history of the tung oil industry in east Texas, which derived from tung tree nuts, from the 1920s through World War II. An overview of the growing of tung tree orchards in Texas, including the deforestation of Texas' longleaf yellow pine (Pinus palustris) forests in order to clear land for tung tree harvesting, is provided. An overview of the efforts to promote Texas' tung oil industry, including by the Beaumont, Texas Chamber of Commerce, agricultural experts and newspaper editors, is also provided.
