- Title
Access to Cervical Cancer Screening: Training Internists So Skill Limitations Are Not a Barrier to Care.
- Authors
Charney, Pamela
- Abstract
The editorial presents the importance of training internists for sufficient skill development to handle and care patients with cervical cancer. Some of the procedures, such as pelvic examination, screening and Pap smear acquisition, need special skills. Lack of adequate care of patients with cervical cancer results in death. Many poor women may not have access to gynecologists, hence internal medicine takes a vital role in filling up the gap, and the training programs provide attention to pap smear and other techniques. Research has been carried out by Educators from the University of Washington and Wake Forest University on Pap smear collection adequacy during internship, points out that it increases their confidence.
