This paper explores the main contributions of the figurational sociological tradition to the sociology of sport. It also charts the development of this work since the pioneering text, Quest for Excitement, by Norbert Elias and Eric Dunning, as well as offering a brief overview of some of the debates and disagreements that have arisen within the area.
