- Abstract
The article presents a summary of a dissertation that focuses on the role of phonological salience and feature interpretability in the grammar of typically developing and language impaired children. The question is asked whether the problem is in the representation of formal features and what it is that renders those inaccessible to children with SLI (specific language impairment). It also examines whether language development in SLI deviates from typical language acquisition in a way that makes it possible to talk about language impairment rather than language delay. Studies were done on three groups of children who were given speech elicitation tests that aimed at investigating the formal features of tense in the verbal domain, as well as gender, case and number in the nominal domain.
