- Abstract
The article focuses on the "Razmnama," the Persian translation of the Hindu epic "Mahabharata" which was ordered by Mughal Emperor Akbar. A brief historical background is provided on efforts by Akbar to incorporate Hindu and other religious and political factions into the imperial bureaucracy. The complex linguistic and religious negotiations in the production of the Razmnama are discussed, as well as the translation process. Paintings in the "Razmnama" that indicate a process involving adaptation as well as translation are also cited.
