The article discusses the 2-year grassroots fund-raising effort of the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Knight Cancer Institute run by cancer researcher Brian Druker in order to receive the pledged matching donation of $500 million from co-founder Philip Knight of the sportswear brand Nike. Topics include the public's knowledge of Druker's work on the revolutionary leukemia drug Gleevec, the Institute's focus on early detection of cancer, and criticism of the campaign's advertising.
