The road to fraud starts with a single step.
- Authors
Crocker, Jennifer
- Abstract
The article offers the author's insights on the academic fraud on social psychologist Diederik Stapel's use of fabricated data in his research and how it started. She says that such fraud in science was distressful as it damages students' and collaborators' careers and damages public trust in science and scientists. She also relates a 1963 study by Stanley Milgram to understand the start of fraud and notes the significance of minor transgression, which eventually made next transgression easier.
