- Authors
Fulcher, Jane F.
- Abstract
The article presents an in-depth analysis of the ideological and political appropriation of the 19th-century French composer Claude Debussy within occupied France during World War II. Details are given outlining how Debussy was used as an iconic figure which represented "classical" French aesthetics. Commentary is provided noting how he was used by both the political Right and Left wings of society to promote a national identity and ideology, as seen in both the Vichy government and the French Resistance. Discussion is also given regarding broader connections between musical history, aesthetics and cultural identity.
