- Abstract
This paper economically analyses the actual quality of antimalarials in Dar es Salaam using drug quality analysis involving identification, uniformity of weight, and assay of active ingredients. Findings reveal all sampled drugs met the necessary condition of good quality containing amounts of active ingredients that complied with BP specifications. Analysis beyond the assay of active ingredients tests however revealed some batches of antimalarials manufactured in Tanzania to possess less quality relative to other sampled drugs due to wide variation of amount of active ingredient relative to lower and upper thresholds as per pharmacopoeial specifications resulting in inconsistencies in the quality of final output. Regulators should therefore thus focus on enhancing drug quality monitoring activities beyond assessing whether drugs comply with pharmacopoeial standards or not as well as well as increasing emphasis on monitoring drug manufacturers.
